The Idaho Outdoor Fieldhouse – Hyperbarics + Wellness
The Idaho Outdoor Fieldhouse is a 6.8-acre campus on Boise’s Greenbelt that combines training, wellness, and housing to support adaptive athletes, veterans, and their families. Designed as a restorative environment, the campus fosters community and recovery through facilities dedicated to movement, therapy, and connection to nature.
At 15,534 square feet, the Hyperbarics + Wellness building serves as the campus gateway—providing specialized therapy and restorative care. Its centerpiece is two custom-built hyperbaric oxygen chambers imported from India, each accommodating up to ten individuals. These chambers enable athletes and veterans to undergo 45–60 minute “dives” that promote faster healing, manage infection, strengthen the immune system, and enhance overall recovery.
A central design challenge was meeting the diverse physical and sensory needs of users—including wheelchair mobility, prosthetics, and visual impairments. Through interviews with adaptive athletes, the team identified everyday barriers in typical healthcare environments and designed beyond code to remove them. The chambers were set on recessed slabs with raised access floors for flush, level entry; all thresholds and flooring transitions were detailed to eliminate obstructions. Natural daylight, intuitive circulation, and views to the foothills create a sense of orientation, transparency, and calm.
Locally quarried sandstone grounds the building in its site, while its form echoes the adjacent athletic facility—establishing a cohesive architectural language across the campus. The result is a place that advances wellness, dignity, and resilience for those who never stop.
